The more consistent citations you have across reputable directories, the more confidence Google and Bing have in your business details — and the higher you rank for local searches like "plumber near me" or "accountant in [town]".
Consistency is critical. Your business name, address and phone number must be identical across every listing. Even small differences like "Street" vs "St" can dilute your authority. Get it right once and replicate it everywhere.

Tips for building citations effectively
Be consistent: Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on every listing. Choose a format and stick to it — including punctuation, abbreviations and spacing.
Start with the essentials: Google Business Profile is by far the most important citation. Get this fully filled out first before moving on to other directories.
Use your local landline or consistent mobile: Avoid using different phone numbers across listings. A local landline tends to reinforce your local presence more than a mobile, though either works.
Add photos and descriptions: Many directories allow you to add photos, opening hours and a description. The more complete your listings, the better they perform.
Monitor for duplicates: Duplicate listings with slightly different details can hurt your rankings. Check for and remove or merge any duplicates you find.
